Known as the oldest continually-run family-owned racetrack in North America, Hawthorne Race Course has celebrated live thoroughbred racing in Chicago's for more than 120 years. Currently Hawthorne is now second tier to Arlington Park, the premier horse racing track in Chicago.

Developed by Edward Corrigan, a Chicago businessman who owned the 1890 Kentucky Derby winner, Riley, the track opened in 1891 with a five-race card including the featured Chicago Derby.

As one of Illinois' most prominent horse racing tracks, Hawthorne hosts a significant list of relevant racing events, including the annual Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap, Illinois Derby, as well as November's Illinois Festival of Racing restricted to state-breds.
